    My car

I've owned this car for three years, taking it from 29,000 to 90,000 miles, and while it's never left me stranded, it's had a number of niggles.

The most annoying fault has been frequent blown bulbs, usually the rear lights. For some reason they just don't last, although the indicators and headlights seem more robust.

On one memorable occasion, the driver's window dropped into the door and smashed. Apparently the plastic clip fitted by the ever-parsimonious VW often breaks.

The rear wiper fluid pipe also failed, leaving a nasty blue stain on the headlining, a fuse blew rendering the central locking and interior lights useless, the mass air filter expired, the brakes have needed work, the heater and air-conditioning switch lights failed, the body paint is thin and scratches easily, the cup holder broke and the folding arm rest lid has snapped off...

OK, some of the above is the fault of my car being used and abused over time, but given that I've never missed a service (roughly every 10,000 miles) and don't exactly thrash the beast, it's not been the cheapest car to run. Only an Alfa Romeo I had years ago cost me more.

Plus points are that it always, always gets me to my destination, feels solid despite the odd rattle, has bags of torque and after all this time I still love those blue dashboard lights.

Maybe I've just been unlucky, and my car was made during a particularly riotous Oktoberfest.

    My car

Bought this car and have nothing positive to say about it barring the interior and quality of the cabin. Have had numerous problems over the 2 years I have owned it from rattles in the cabin to the engine needing and buring oil continuously! The car pulls to the left all the time at various speeds but the dealership fobbed me off - Another dealership solved the problem stating it was indeed a suspension problem. When I break from high speeds the brakes make a hell of a screaming noise! Talk about reliable - not even 30 thousand on the clock and its like driving a 10 year old bean tin!! Getting a Ford Focus tomorrow and wished i had never traded in my last Ford for a VW.

    My car

I've had the GTI DSG for just over a year now, in that time its been into the garage 15 times for various items fixing but mostly annoying cabin & dashboard rattles. They get fixed but either the garage has forgotten to put a bit of trim back on or the rattles re-appear a couple of weeks later. The dealership network is the worst ive encountered overall in fact.

Its good to drive however, DSG is super smooth and easy to use. I regularly get 43mpg ont he motorway at 70mph, and 31mpg around town. Insurance is reasonable too.

Im just embarassed to take my friends out in it without the radio on - it rattles worse than my 3 year old corsa and cost twice as much! This will be my last VW!

    My car

I have owned this car since Jan 2006, and having taken it from 45000 miles to 95000 in just over 18 months, I cannot really fault the car! If you are buying a golf, you know what you are getting in terms of image, and even the SE spec commands respect from your mates, inside there are a few rattles which have probably developed as a result of wear and tear, but the most important thing is that the engine still feels as tight as it did when I first bought it! I haven't really incurred many problems with the car, apart from a faulty temperature sender- which was replaced under warranty, and a broken ABS sensor, the only other problem I have encountered is with the tail light letting in water, apparently a design fault, I seemed to go through tail light bulbs for fun until I had the guilty tail light re-sealed, cost..£5! this is a design fault,so will affect a lot of Golfs I presume, so I recommend doing this! The car has been a dream to own,I love the styling and the blue dash lights are awesome, the diesel is really punchy off the mark, and sits on the motorway beautifully, my only gripe with the way it drives is the body roll, but Im sure the sports suspension helps with this.Im reluctantly getting rid of the car,as the company I work for specify our cars must have under 100000 miles on,I would get another golf, but I just don't like the new ones that much!Im off to BMW for a while until the Mark 6 comes out (next year?)if its as good as the one Im selling, ill be back for more!
