    My car

Have owned this car for almost three years (55 plate) as a company car and owned MK4 Golf prior. Am sorry to say its going next month when new car is due as this has been a brilliant car and its hard to list any faults. Have done 28K mainly on motorways and country roads. Have been getting 55+ mpg for some time and only had to top oil up once. Apart from normal servicing have had no other costs - super reliable.

Above all its the drive and image that really make it stand out. Handling on sports suspension is great although this comes slightly at the expense of ride comfort around town. Steering has just the right amount of weight and feel. 2.0 TDI is a peach with power on tap in any gear - and apparently the new 2.0 is better still. And there's still something about Golfs that give it that bit more cache than Focus/Astra/Megane etc. I'd even put the image over the 1-Series or A3 - as at least its not a poor man's equivalent!

Only gripe would be on equipment levels and cost of extras - had to pay extra for 2zone climate (worth it) and no MP3 connection on earlier models. Other extras like sunroof, CD changer etc expensive vs compettition (and £2K for satnav and £1.5K for leather is Merc/BMW territory).

Overall a great car for the whole of the three years I've had it - I'd have got the Mk6 if VW had got their fingers out and launched it in time for September.

    My car

Bought the car new in 2005 and have since done 35000 miles. Had several niggling problems with it, but these have been more of an annoyance than a danger. VW dealers have on the whole been very good and sorted every problem, offering a courtesy car in each instance. On the whole it's been an excellent car that looks good and has a great cache. This is the 3rd Golf we've had (MK3, MK4 and now this MK5) and I feel it's the best yet. OK, the interior probably isn't quite up there with the MK4, but it's still very, very good. The drive is seriously improved (MK4 did wallow around the corners) and it's brilliant for long distance. Cruise control is an excellent feature, although VW ought to consider people's use of MP3 technology a bit more and have at least an audio input socket as standard instead of an option. After test driving a BMW 3 series (ugly, plasticky interior) 1 series (if BMW are trying to attract Golf owners why did they make the interior space so small??) and an A3 (no personality) we have opted for another MK5 Golf (1.4 TSi GT 170BHP) which we'll keep until the MK6 comes out next year. I highly recommend this car...

    My car

I have owned this car now for approx 1 year, and i have had endless problems with it(turbo sensor changed, problem with the dump valve and DPF filter and other numerous faults to long to mention). Also just had the car serviced and had the wrong oil put in the engine(the gt tdi 170 diesels have to have 507 grade oil and the garage used 505)When i told them they had made a mistake the answer was "we only use 505 grade oil on the diesels".when they realised they made such a big mistake the oil was changed and 507 grade put in.(how many other 170 diesels that have been serviced at this garage have had the wrong oil put in there cars??????)I informed VW UK and told them about this huge mistake they had made, and they said VW will look in to it.Still to this day VW UK have done nothing and i never even got an apology from them.

BE WARNED FROM MY EXPERIENCE TO NEVER BUY A VOLKSWAGEN CAR,THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS PEE POOR AND NO HELP AT ALL,AND NEVER TAKE YOUR CAR TO THE VW GARAGE IN NEWCASTLE BECAUSE THEY HAVENT GOT A CLUE.(CLOWNS COMES TO MIND) If any one is wondering how i knew what oil they used in the service,it was because they had left the top up oil on the front seat of my car.

I WILL NEVER BUY VOLKSWAGEN AGAIN

    My car

I have had to tick I own this car to be able to write this review. Having read your recommendation I have tried to order the car from several VW dealers who have all advised VW have stopped taking ordres and that they cannot process the order in their ordering syste. Having called VW directly through helpline numbers I have been advised they take orders. Your reviews suggest it is available with long waiting time but I have not found a dealer who can order the car
