Have had a Lupo GTI for about 7 months and to say it makes me smile everytime I drive it would be an understatement. This has to be one of the most fun cars i've ever had. It's small, light and so puntable round corners it can't help but make you love it. I completely agree with the other two reviewers thoughts on the car, especially in regards to it not being a Mini. That's such a good thing. The Lupos are rare, great fun and you certainly suprise other drivers with their performance. As for the running costs, for the type of car i don't think they're that bad. They are definitely cheaper to insure than any bigger GTI. As for tyres, I've found the Toyo, Pro Xs great. They don't last quite as long as some of the others but the grip is fantastic, even in the wet/slippery conditions of northern Scotland. At about £50 a wheel from blackcircles online, they're not too badly priced. Overall though, a top little car. It's the closest thing I've ever driven to a go-kart with a roof.
I absolutely love my Lupo 1.4e. It is in Sunflower Yellow and it looks very cute indeed. The only negative point is the slightly disappointing fuel consumption as mine is an Automatic. However there are many positives including fantastic build quality and choice of interior plastics. What I love about the Lupo is that it is very well made and it is built to last. It feels very solid and there is absolutely zero wind noise when driving. The seats are all very comfortable. The steering is precise and it has a very nice feel to it. The 1.4 engine with the Auto box is almost magical, it has a very smooth gearchange. The blue instrument panel lights are super, lookm great at night. I would recommend this car to anyone, I would not consider the brazilian built bland looking new model Fox.
I've had my silver 2002 Lupo GTi for three years and still love it. It's easy to see why it's rated as one of the best cars VW ever made - and the closest model to the concept of the original Golf GTi. I'd cry all day if I ever had to sell it.
Pros: huge fun, rare (under 1000 sold in UK), very fast (most drivers think it's just another small car and are shocked when it leaves them for dead), throaty engine, twin exhausts, build quality of bigger VWs, understated styling, agile, sticks to road, 6-speed box, xenon headlights, big brakes, holds value (bit of an instant classic), surprisingly comfortable, decent fuel consumption, easy to park, not a Mini.
Cons: parts aren't cheap, tyres hard to get hold of and expensive, struggles to get power down in the wet (no ABS or traction control), no spare wheel, tiny boot (but who buys one for the boot?), minor electrical faults, jumpy in first gear, wouldn't want a big crash in it, relatively high insurance.
Don't get it serviced at a VW dealership as they charge through the nose. I found a local VW specialist who costs half the price for twice the job.
I'd urge anyone thinking of a Mini Cooper S to try a Lupo GTi. It will put a huge grin on your face and make you stand out from the crowd.
This is my second Lupo and I can't ever imagine selling it. She struggles with some huge hills near where I live but apart from that is a little beauty.
It's a very small boot but still copes with the week's shopping. She moved my daughter to and from Uni and I've moved house twice in it - she never fails to rise to the occasion.
Amazingly easy to park i.e. turns on a sixpence and economical to boot!
A beautiful little car, PLEASE PLEASE VW bring back the Lupo!!!
