This is the worst car I've ever had (including a Metro) - it has had nine clutches in 90,000 miles, killer seats that cause DVT in one leg, and it has been totally unreliable.
THe engine cut out at speed, the boot opened at 70mph several times, all the instruments would die, and it could drop to 15mpg, but VW could never find any faults.
The MoT at three years and 90,000 miles needed two new drive shafts, new shock absorbers (front and rear), four discs and pads, a new battery, alternator and engine management unit. Funny how the dealer serviced it five weeks before then denied ever having seen the car before.
Luckily the lease company stepped in and wrote it off. Avoid like the plague.
Although pleased with the car on purchase, since then we have had a faulty coil, oil sensor fault, non retracting rear seat belt, but the biggest problem is the ingress water problem, which if your car is older than 4 yrs vw customer care will not fix - and you are looking at a £1000 bill. Currently I have an inch of water in my 2002 passat, not good. Would I recommend this car to any one, yes if you have a garage...!
great car loads of power comfy to drive averages 46.8 to gallon, locally and driven about 60 mph on motorway returned 57.6 would recommend to any one.fantastic motor.
Like Michael Brown, W YORKS & Steven Carter I too had a knocking sound from the nearside. At first I thought it might have been a shock absober or that the exhaust was loose. Like other Passat owners I am not too happy with my local VW dealer. I therfore, took the car to an independant VW repairer who diagnosed my problem and replaced the nearside driveshaft.Problem solved. I hope that this has been of use.
