Got this car 1996 second hand in 2012, best car so far. Drives brilliantly with a nice bit of go in her for a 1.4 The interior is nicely designed with more storage that other cars for the age
I have owned this car for 6 months and so far it has proved to be a good first car. It is reasonable on fuel (40mpg) which is not as good as i expected from such a small engine. The ride is comfortable although there is some body role in the corners. I would not advise this car for anyone who would drive regulary on the motorway as there is a lot of engine noise over 65mph and not a lot of pull from the engine. Overall this is a very solid car that is cheap to run and insure which I reccomend over a 106 for example.
I've owned this car for six years, bought when one year old. Has only broked down twice- once when clutch pedal collapsed (replaced unde warranty) and one recently when "ERG" valve failed. Struts/wheel-bearings tend to need to be eplaced occassionally. Servicing costs do dig into your wallet, taking the pleasure off ownership. Reasonable ride, not too soft, not to firm. Nice Germanic, slightly dour interior (don't dig Japanese too well...). Electric door mirrors on even basic model may be "bizarre" (re 6th form Suffolk reviewer previously) but make reversing on single-track roads in the north-west Scottish highlands a lot easier. Am strangely fond of this car, despite it's non-descript almost conservative styling and high-ish maintenance costs. Can't remember it ever (even in latitide 57 winter) refusing to start. (But don't want to tempt fate.)
This is a great second-hand buy assuming that the timing belt has been changed every five years and has had regular servicing. You need to clear mud from the gutters behind the wheel arches as rot can start from the sills. The 1.4 is fast, the 16 valve version quick. The usual traits of bushes and bearings can wear. Also, make sure you get a second set of keys as it'll cost around £100 for VW and only VW to code.
