I owned the pre-facelift 70hp 1.4S TDi five-door - exactly the same apart from the new grill.
You will notice how solid it is compared to competition. It's a great car let down by awful seats which are too shallow and give no lumbar support. The back ones are also like a flat bench.
The engine pull is fantastic - I would say almost as good as my BMW 120d. Motorway overtaking is swift, safe and assured. Torque steer is noticeable, though the car rolls a fair deal in corners. It has a great gearbox, a great finish, and returns 33mpg in city driving with the air-conditioning on and two people in it.
It is let down by unsupportive seats and universally disinterested VW dealers - although servicing is good. I would have bought another if it wasn't for those two factors. Maybe I'll try getting sports seats (although these still do not have a deep enough base), and as for the dealers - just grin and bear it for £12,000!
