What a great car the S80 T6 is!
OK, the handling isn't the best but then it's big car and given that it's not bad.
The engine is sweet, much sweeter than many others especially the four cylinder Saabs!
I have two gripes... one major, one minor. The minor gripe is turning circle... it's terrible. In fact Volvo's have been renowned for poor turning circles for a long time (don't they listen?). The stats say 12 feet but when you're trying to do a U-turn or park in a bay it feels more like 12 yards.
The major gripe is that Volvo can't make a decent gearbox. It's hard to describe but comes basically down to the pickup is pathetic. It seems to have been designed to feed in the power smoothly and gradually, which massively reduces responsiveness. In fact I find that despite having over 300 bhp (I got it chipped) just about anything will beat me in the first 50 yards. Not much glory for a car costing over £30k! And the problem isn't new but Volvo just don't want to listen. Using it in manual mode is a waste of time to because it's the clutch mechanism that robs the response not the gears.
Come on Volvo tune the gearbox to be more responsive. At least give us a sports option on the performance models.
Fantastic car! Comfy, quick and economical. I get a regular 50mpg, OK I'm happy to cruise at 65-70.
Comments in reviews regarding handling are true, but I did not buy a car to throw round corners, I wanted comfort for the 30k miles I drive each year.
I have the soft leather seats, which after 3 years are still pristeen and smell lovely!
The Stereo system with the multi changer is exceptional, probably a better sound than the one at home!
Service costs have been in line with my expectations and I have had no unexpected faults or failures. The Volvo dealers have proved to be generally customer friendly and prepared to go that extra mile to keep me a happy customer. I have only 2 issues that have mared what has been an excellent ownership experience.
1). I have been unable to get satisfactory information about new maps for the Sat nav. And the price is £360 for a new DVD so you would expect a better level of service. Volvo customer services answer was "look at the web site" Which was very poor! and "it is not a Volva product. It is provided by a third party".... But I bought it from Volvo!
2). The factory fitted car phone is absolutely rubbish! Very basic functionality and locks and freezes as soon as you do more than just manually dial a number. Volve have replaced the unit two times but the faults are the same. If you are thinking of having this as an optional extra, save your money and get a kit from Nokia, Sony etc.
The ultimate test, Yes I would buy a
The car is extremely comfortable, and apparently one of the safest cars on the road. It drives well, is economical and, contrary to some of the reports I have seen, I think it is quick for a car of its size and weight. Oh, and I like its looks.
I have a 2005 D5 SE Auto. The combination of diesel and auto gearbox makes for effortless driving. Cruise control on the open road is a real pleasure. Fuel consumption is amazing - 38mpg for day-to-day work journeys, 48mpg on long runs. My 2CV used to have the same fuel consumption.
Comfort for all is excellent, and long journeys are tireless for both us and the car. The dealer is outstanding. The car was delivered to the promised day and hour. The audio equipment is breathtakingly good. The bi-xenon headlights take a little getting used to, but it is like driving into an illuminated widescreen panorama.
