For The higher-powered 1.7 diesel returns more than 60mpg, and it's reasonably flexible. The Vauxhall Astra 1.7 CDTi 125 ecoFL SRi VX-Line comes with sports suspension, while the VX Line package adds 19-inch alloys and a unique bodykit.

Against The VX Line adds considerably to the price of the basic SRi-trimmed car - which is expensive to start with - and yet amounts to little more than a bodykit.

Target Price team says:

Owning an Astra shouldn't cost you the earth. Yes, list prices are high, but dealers will offer big discounts to prise business away from their competitors, and you'll get even larger savings from online brokers.

Fuel consumption figures are competitive for the class, and reasonable CO2 emissions (especially on Ecoflex models) mean that tax bills won't be too steep for company car drivers. Vauxhall's boffins have done lots of work to make low-speed crash damage simpler and cheaper to repair, and that also drives down insurance costs.

If you're wondering which Astra you should pick, we reckon the 138bhp 1.4 turbo provides the best balance of performance and economy. We'd point you towards Exclusiv trim, too. It has the same air-conditioning, remote locking and electric front windows as the entry-level S model, but also adds cruise control, remote audio controls and ambient lighting. Bizarrely, though, it's actually cheaper than the equivalent S model. Go figure.
