You probably know Vauxhall estates as boxy workaholics that do a good job, but without any flair. Well, with the Insignia Sports Tourer you can forget all that. It's a genuinely elegant car that brings the panache of the hatchback to the estate market.

Practicalities first, though. When running as a five-seater it is competitive for space against its rivals' and has more rear headroom than the hatchback because of the reprofiled roof. Loading up isn't easy, though, because the wide rear bumper restricts access. With the rear seats folded it's not quite so impressive – roomy, but no match for the best.

On the road it feels much like the hatchback: composed and comfortable, but not as alert and direct as the Mazda 6 and Ford Mondeo, and some engines aren't very refined. Worthy of mention is the 1.6 turbo that offers a genuine alternative for people who don't do the miles to get value from a costlier diesel. Plus, the 4x4 versions could well appeal to towers.
