For Innovative take on the small MPV with rear-hinged rear doors for easy access. SE is the Meriva's most lavish trim, with alloy wheels, a panoramic galss roof and some extra practical touches, such as folding trays on the front seat backs and underseat storage.

Against This smaller output turbo engine lacks oomph, while motorway refinement is poor. The Meriva isn’t great as a five seater, either.

More than just an MPV with funny doors, the Meriva stacks up as an ideal car for a small family – better for four than five, though. This is our favourite engine, but some may prefer to spend more on an engine with a little more power.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

With the Vauxhall Meriva there are just four trims (Expression, S, Exclusiv and SE) and five engines to choose from. Expression is a rather basic entry-level car without air-con or curtain airbags – in fact, you have to step up to the pricey Exclusiv version to get those essentials. The fancy glass roof is only available on top-of-the-range SE model.

Prices of the models you’ll want (Exclusiv or SE) are steep, but likely to be offset somewhat by decent discounts – expect well into four figures off. If the dealer won’t at least match our Target Price, walk away.

Low-rate finance can also be expected, but some offers aren’t available on the entry-level Expression model.
