For This engine is punchy once the turbo is spinning, and well suited to family chores. It’s reasonably refined, too, and Exclusiv trim brings all the essential kit.

Against Much pricier than the 1.3-litre diesel, and the running costs that accompany this engine aren’t anywhere near as attractive.

Target Price team says:

With the Vauxhall Meriva there are just four trims (Expression, S, Exclusiv and SE) and five engines to choose from. Expression is a rather basic entry-level car without air-con or curtain airbags – in fact, you have to step up to the pricey Exclusiv version to get those essentials. The fancy glass roof is only available on top-of-the-range SE model.

Prices of the models you’ll want (Exclusiv or SE) are steep, but likely to be offset somewhat by decent discounts – expect well into four figures off. If the dealer won’t at least match our Target Price, walk away.

Low-rate finance can also be expected, but some offers aren’t available on the entry-level Expression model.
