For Decent equipment for the money - CD player, rain-sensing wipers, air-con and electric rear windows. The 1.8-litre petrol engine is flexible enough to deal with the Zafira's size and most loads.

Against Diesel engines are more capable still, and several key rivals, including the VW Touran, offer a better-quality finish in their interiors, and a little more refinement.

The original Zafira pretty much started a revolution when it was launched, and even though this latest version may not have the ultimate flexibility of its more modern rivals, it’s still a decent MPV.

In the front five seats, for instance, it’s as spacious as any one of its rivals, while it’s also better to drive than many.

It only really looks off the pace in the rearmost seats, which have only enough room for children, and in the centre bench, which is in one piece when many rivals have three individual seats.

For the most part, the engines are all up to the job of hauling around such a big car. However, the smart money goes on one of the smooth, punchy diesels. Likewise, we’d avoid the most basic trim, but Exclusiv will give you everything you really need.
