Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

Look no further if you’re after a compact family car with a big, practical boot. Most versions of the VW Golf Estate are excellent, too, although you still need to be mindful of a few things.

All models are comfortable and have good body control, but the 1.2-litre petrol and 1.6 diesels have less sophisticated rear suspension than the other versions, so they aren’t quite as good at smothering lumps and bumps in the road.

The 103bhp 1.6-litre diesel engine offers enough performance for most situations, and we’d also go for SE trim, which offers the best balance of equipment and price.

Two service intervals are available: Fixed Service, for cars that do fewer than 10,000 miles a year; and Flexible Service, which is designed for higher-mileage drivers. Cars on the Fixed Service interval need to be serviced every 10,000 miles or once a year, while those on the Flexible Service plan can go for up to 18,000 miles or two years before they need attention.
