For Sharp and stable at speed, this mini-Passat looks and drives like the Golf that it's based on.

Against It's bigger, heavier and thirstier than the Golf. It also costs more – although you get more standard kit for the money

The Jetta should be just the thing if the Passat is too big for you, but it can't match the Golf hatchback's versatility.

Jetta Our pick

Volkswagen Jetta Saloon 1.4 TSI 122 SE 4dr

This version of the Jetta is our favourite, but the saloon shape means the boot could be more practical: there's quite a drop to the load floor, making it awkward to load heavy items

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

Despite the different name, the Jetta is fundamentally a booted, saloon version of the Golf MK V that offers buyers something a bit smaller than the Passat, should they not want a hatchback.

Choosing a Jetta does forsake the Golf's hatchback practicality, but rear-seat space is a little more generous in the Jetta than the Golf and the boot is large.

Performance is much the same as with the Golf when using the equivalent engines, although the Jetta makes do with a more limited range of engines.

The petrol 1.4 may be small, but its two versions pack sufficient punch to stand as almost the only petrol engine in the range, while the 2.0-litre turbodiesels are strong and frugal.

Nimble, precise handling makes the Jetta good to drive and refinement is fine. The simple, high quality interior looks good and lasts well, and there's plenty of equipment fitted to all models, including electric windows, air conditioning and a CD stereo.
