For Supercharged and turbocharged the VW Scirocco 1.4 TSI 160 has plenty of grunt as well as low running costs and an affordable list price. Kit includes auto headlights, 17-inch alloys, and adaptive chassis control.

Against The engine is good, but it lacks the real performance of the 2.0-litre engines. Residuals won't be as good as the diesels, and discounts are small.

The VW Scirocco 1.4 TSI 160 is almost the cheapest Scirocco, but it's a great option – well specced and still offering the engaging dynamics that makes the car so good to drive. All it lacks is the outright pace and residuals of the bigger models.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

The Volkswagen Scirocco is a great purchase no matter what engine you opt for.

If you’re looking for performance, the 2.0 TSI has brilliant flexibility, ample grunt and reasonable running costs.

Although the 1.4 TSI versions lack the outright pace of the bigger 2.0-litre model, they still offer enough to let you enjoy the sharp handling and responsive dynamics that make the Scirocco a great driver’s car.

The 2.0 diesel engines (with either 138 or 168bhp) aren’t what most would traditionally associate with a sports coupe, but it makes perfect sense if you want an affordable and comfortable cruiser.

The 2.0-litre models have the option of a six-speed semi-automatic DSG box in place of the standard six-speed manual, but it’ll set you back a four-figure sum and doesn’t add that much to the experience.

Resale values should be excellent and, although discounts are possible, don't expect them to be particularly huge.
