    My car

i have beeen driving a 2001 (x reg) sharan 2.0 se for nearly 2 years now and my wife's had for nearly 4 years. in that time the car has done a couple of trips to wales and averaged 32 mpg. as for reliability we have replaced: 1 x full set of brake pads and discs. 2 x front track rod ends. 3 x tyres (but i only buy part-worn one's). 1 x side light bulb. 1 x brake light bulb. 1 x indicator bulb. 2 x lambda sensors (1 x front and 1 x rear). 1 x set of plugs and leads. plus normal service items (oil and filters)and thats all in nearly 4 years the car is surprisingly quick thanks to 6 speed manual gearbox, it can still pull from 60 in 6th gear to overtake without struggling and it also feels like a normal golf sized car to drive in corners and straights. the ride comfort is fine on a trip to wales as well as round town. with the seats folded down you can fit a dismantled king size bed and mattress in so load space is great. with the seats up i can fit my family of 6 plus a weeks shopping and pushchair easily.

    My car

Bought an 18 month old Sharan 1.8T Carat with 50K on the clock (had been a hire car) from a car supermarket in 2003. Reason? Three teenage kids who complained/argued constantly in the back of our old Cavalier hatchback. Instantly family trips became ... blissful (almost). Each child/young adult had their own supportive roomy seat with a 3 point belt, and with the rear 2 seats taken out plenty of room for all the camping gear. (It's also palatial/limo-like when you use it as a 4 or 6 seater with the captain's chair armrests) Was amazed with the ease my wife took to driving it! A long dashboard, in addition to not being able to see the end of the bonnet, didn't phase her - it really does drive 'like a car'. The 1.8T has plenty of poke, even with 7 up, often surprising passengers. It does so with a reassuring solidity. 6 years on, with 137K on the clock, a replaced steering rack (VW paid a third) and wiper motor (only recently), I still really like this car! It's done everything that we've asked of it without fuss, often returning close to 40 MPG.
