For The Touareg is cheaper to buy than most rivals, and all but the basic models come loaded with kit. It's a sharp drive on-road and capable off it, while the 3.0-litre diesel engine is superb.
Against Top-spec models are stupidly expensive and their residuals aren't up with the best. The low-speed ride is firm and some minor trim could be classier. There's no seven-seat model.
The Touareg is a credible effort at building a premium 4x4, but there's too much competition and it's just not as impressive as key rivals such as the Land Rover Discovery.
It took a while for Volkswagen to enter the 4x4 market and the Touareg didn't exactly set the world alight when it arrived.
It shares some parts with the Porsche Cayenne and is similarly road-biased, but it's not quite as sharp to drive or as desirable. The interior is solid rather than stylish, but there's plenty of space, even if the boot floor is rather high. There’s a wide choice of engines given the Touareg’s comparatively small sales figures; the line-up is made up of three turbodiesels and a 3.6-litre V6 petrol.
There’s a mighty V10 TDI engine that heads the range, giving the Touareg silly performance. It’s fitted to the R50 model, which comes with more overly sporting looks, massive 21-inch alloys and a huge price. Those big wheels compromise the already firm-riding Touareg further, although the handling is in every model is excellent for a large 4x4.
