For The stronger of the two engines is definitely the one to choose if you do regular motorway journeys. The VW Up 1.0 75 High Up provides some nice luxury goodies, and the smooth ride and good refinement make it relaxing to drive.
Against This version of the Up looks a bit pricey compared with other city cars.
If you can afford it, the VW Up 1.0 75 High Up is the Up that you want. Pricey compared to rivals, but a bargain for the ability you get.
We’ve driven both versions of the 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. The higher-powered 74bhp car copes well at motorway speeds, but it needs plenty of revs to get going. The 59bhp version is slower, and while it’s capable on urban roads, it can struggle a bit on the motorway. The optional ASG transmission makes life more difficult, as it causes the car to lunge in between shifts.
There are three trim levels to choose from, and all come with four airbags and ABS as standard. It also has an automatic emergency braking system, and although it doesn’t come as standard, it can be fitted to any version as an option – it’s reasonably priced, too.
The VW Up is pretty basically kitted out. Air-conditioning and electric front windows only start mid-range, and if you want the terrifically handy portable sat-nav infotainment unit, you’ll either have to add it as an option or buy the top of the range car.
