For For a reasonable price, the Volvo XC60 2.0 D3 DRIVe SE 2WD S/S comes with all the equipment that you’re likely to want. Running costs are a lot lower than all but one other model in the range.

Against There’s no four-wheel drive, so this version isn’t as rugged as the D5 or T6 versions. Performance isn’t exactly lively.

Despite its big wheels, elevated ground clearance and butch looks, the XC60 isn’t a serious off-roader, but more of a classy, rugged family-ferrying crossover.

There are three five-cylinder diesel models available, all of which provide decent performance. The turbocharged 281bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine has masses of oomph, but it's very thirsty.

Entry-level ES models come with alloy wheels, four electric windows, plus climate and cruise controls.

Upgrading to SE spec brings automatic wipers and an electric driver’s seat with memory, while SE Lux brings leather upholstery, satellite-navigation, cornering lights and parking sensors.

Sporty R-Design models get a beefy bodykit, metallic interior trim and a Sports chassis with stiffer suspension and more direct steering.
