For The XC90 has space for seven in its classy interior. It’s also relatively cheap to run, comfortable and well equipped.
Against The automatic gearbox can be slow to react; slightly gruff diesel and some wind noise at speed.

The XC90 is great to drive and excellent value next to other large SUVs. Anybody in the market for a large SUV should have one on their shopping list.

Target Price team says:
The plush Volvo XC90 is ideal for anyone looking to seat seven without plumping for a more rugged SUV or a traditional MPV. The two rearmost seats are unusual in being the same size as those in the middle row, which makes them particularly comfortable. There’s good space back there, too, so the XC90 really can seat seven people in comfort. Our favourite engine is the D5 diesel. Not only does it provide effortless performance, it brings impressively low running costs. We’d also go for entry-level Momentum trim, which comes with loads of equipment for the money. While a Range Rover Sport might be sportier to drive, and an Audi Q7 slightly smoother over lumpy roads, the XC90 is still a formidable package and should be right at the top of your shopping list.
