Greenest luxury cars

16 June 2008
Audi A8

We list the five cleanest luxury cars in their class and recommend three we think you should consider.

Luxury cars: What Car? Recommends
1 Audi A8 2.8 FSI
You’ve probably noticed that most of the other cars here have diesel engines, yet the A8 is powered by petrol. That’s because it has a particularly efficient direct-injection engine that, unlike most rivals', emits less than 200g/km of CO2. There are no corners cut; the A8 is as refined, roomy and luxurious as you could wish for.

2 Mercedes S320 L CDI
Let's get straight to the point: this is one of the world's truly great cars, offering a sublime ride and high-quality refinement. In fact, the only disappointment is the price tag, which puts it beyond the reach of the vast majority of buyers. It's not the greenest car here, but it's close enough for its other qualities to make it our recommendation.

3 Jaguar XJ 2.7 diesel saloon
Jaguar has built the XJ with an aluminium body, improving performance, saving weight and boosting economy and emissions in the process. The 2.7-litre diesel is a fine engine, giving the XJ the characteristics of a sporting saloon rather than a luxury limo.
