The entry-level Cayman 2.0 is a fine option. With 296bhp it's really not slow because, on a cold, damp day, we timed one fitted with the seven-speed PDK automatic gearbox going from 0-60mph in 4.6sec. And that was without the optional Sport Chrono pack that, Porsche claims, makes it even quicker. It's not just its outright speed but the way its power builds; it gets really gutsy from around 2500-3000rpm and then romps away evermore willingly to the 7500rpm redline. It's smoother than the 2.5-litre Cayman S and sounds aggressive and racy, just not as intoxicating as the six-cylinder GTS.

This S model gets the more powerful 345bhp 2.5-litre petrol engine that's quick, but full of flats spots and emits a rough, unpleasant, four-cylinder sound. It's the least enjoyable engine in the range.


The GTS gets a 394bhp six-cylinder 4.0-litre engine – and it's the best choice if you can stretch to it. 

The GTS adds bigger brakes, a sports exhaust, the Sports Chrono Package, PASM adaptive dampers with 20mm lower suspension and 20in alloy wheels. You also get a bunch of styling add-ons inside and out.

Entry-level Caymans come with air-con, xenon headlights, Alcantara seat trim, heated seats, automatic lights, a 150-watt stereo and a 7.0in infotainment screen with sat-nav, Apple CarPlay, a DAB radio and Bluetooth. Climate control, heated seats, parking sensors and cruise control are all on the options list and are worth adding.

CAYMAN

The GT4 is the ultimate track-orientated edition of the Cayman, adding bigger brakes, a sports exhaust, the Sports Chrono Package, 20in alloy wheels and bespoke suspension – with PASM adaptive dampers and a 30mm reduction in ride height. You also get a bunch of styling add-ons inside and out, including a large rear spoiler.

The S adds 19in alloy wheels and partial-leather seats to the standard Cayman's tally. 

If you want something a little different, Style Edition is all about aesthetics. In fact, while it shares equipment levels with the entry-level Cayman, this trim level adds 20in alloy wheels, and bespoke interior and exterior style elements.
