The Mercedes-Benz SLK is stuffed with safety kit and luxury goodies. It’s refined on the move and keeps road and wind noise suppressed well when up to speed.
High prices are matched to strong resale values, which means the SLK is a good investment. The diesel in this deal is also impressively efficient and its low emissions should keep your tax bill in check.
It gets more luxuries as standard than its rivals, including air-con, Bluetooth, DAB radio and electric windows. You can also specify options such as the Airscarf, which blows warm air on the back of your neck for all-season topless motoring.
The SLK is surprisingly spacious considering its two-seater roadster layout, with plenty of head- and legroom for passengers. With the roof up it also has a reasonably useable boot.
It’s not as good to drive as the BMW Z4, Audi TT or Mazda MX-5. The body control is sloppy around corners and it is neither accomplished enough to be sporty, nor refined enough to be a comfortable tourer.
The four-cylinder engines are gruff and noisy under acceleration. The diesel, in particular, is very rough and compromises the refined character of the car. The manual gearbox is vague in use and doesn’t feel sporty.
The cabin looks good, but under closer inspection it falls down in some areas, with poor plastics and flimsy-feeling switchgear. There is also a slight offset to the pedals, which could cause discomfort over a long journey.
Should I add any options?
The 250 CDI in this deal comes as standard with an automatic gearbox, but if you’re going for an engine where this is an option we’d suggest you tick it, because the manual isn’t very good.
Climate control isn't standard, and it may be worth adding the Airscarf neck heater for just £395.
