We’ve already driven the new VW Polo with this 74bhp three-cylinder petrol engine - it’s smooth and relaxed around town, but just as happy to cruise at 70mph. The Polo’s steering is light and predictable, and the soft suspension soaks up surface imperfections - even badly pockmarked roads are dealt with well.
Plush plastics and a 6.5-inch colour touch-screen on this SE model give the cabin a grown-up feel that sets it apart from rivals.
Body control and handling aren’t as good as the class leaders'; the Polo leans into bends and it’s simply not as agile or fun to drive as a Ford Fiesta. Rear legroom is also disappointing.
Should I add any options?
SE specification comes with a decent level of equipment. You get air-conditioning, DAB digital radio, Bluetooth, electrically adjustable door mirrors, a multi-function steering wheel and 15-inch alloys.
The automatic lights and wipers pack is a good value option for £145, as is the Mirrorlink system for £150, which allows you to see and control smartphone apps on the Polo’s touch-screen. Sat-nav is a little pricey at £700, but cruise control and parking sensors can be added together for £400.
If you take out finance with the dealer, you’ll get an additional discount of £1000. VW is also offering one year's free insurance for drivers aged over 21.
