We were impressed with how well the Pulsar matched up to its rivals when we drove it back in September, and it was named as the best family car for less than Β£16,000 at the recent What Car? Car of the Year awards.

The Pulsar is a great-value car, especially with this deal, and should definitely be considered by anyone in the market for a family hatchback.

For

Of the engines available, the 1.2-litre petrol offers the best refinement and performance. It’s quick, smooth and quiet when accelerating; it’s clear that Nissan has worked hard to keep wind and road noise out of the cabin; it beats its rivals for refinement.

The handling is secure and its claimed fuel economy of 56.5mpg will help to keep down running costs, while CO2 emissions of 117g/km are good news for company car buyers.

The Pulsar is also extremely spacious inside, with plenty of leg- and headroom in the back and a 385-litre boot.

Against

The dashboard's quality isn't as impressive as the Nissan Qashqai's and the control layout isn’t as simple. It’s also not particularly fun or exciting to drive.

Should I add any options?

Entry-level Visia trim is surprisingly well equipped and comes with alloys, air-con, Bluetooth, steering wheel-mounted controls for the stereo and a five-inch colour infotainment display between the speedo and rev counter.

The only optional extras available are for the paintwork.
