It's hard to think of a more honest, down-to-earth car than the Jeep Wrangler. You know what it's all about just by looking at it.
Still, a few new creature comforts never go amiss, and they've arrived in the form of a plusher interior, better fit and finish and a body-coloured hard-top for some versions.
There's also an uprated 2.8-litre four-cyinder diesel engine that now develops 197bhp and 303lb ft of torque (340lb ft with automatic transmision), while a stop-start system on manual versions improves economy by up to 20%.
So, it's a bit more sophisticated, but only in the sense that jeans are posher than dungarees. On-road it's still quite slow, quite noisy and quite rough 'n' ready.
However, when you see the angles it can adopt off-road with all four wheels still on terra firma, you understand why it is as it is.
There are lots of combinations of bodystyle, trim, roof, transmission and four-wheel drive, depending on how extreme you like your leisure pursuits to be, but the one constant is that you're buying an original.
