Most popular cars

Every week, we take a look at the most popular cars in the What Car? reviews section. The top 10 is usually made up of a mix of the most keenly anticipated new models, the What Car? Award winners and the UK's best sellers.

These are the hottest cars from the past seven days:

10th – Mazda CX-5

The new Mazda CX-5 is based on its predecessor, so it's no more practial. But it looks a lot more stylish now and has a much classier interior. It's also one of the most comfortable large SUVs around, soaking up poorly surfaced roads better than rivals such as the Peugeot 5008 and Skoda Kodiaq. And yet the CX-5 is still fun to drive because the well-weighted steering gives you the confidence to place the car exactly where you want it.

9th – Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen's second-generation Tiguan is a great family car. It oozes practicality and, whle it is an expensive choice, it's good to drive and has a smart interior. To keep costs lower, we recommend opting for a mid-range diesel model in SE Nav trim. This gets you sat-nav as well as three-zone climate control, cruise control and more comfortable seats.

8th – BMW X1

There are plenty of premium small SUVs to choose from right now, but the BMW X1 stands out from the crowd thanks to its luxurious and practical interior. It's also good fun to drive, and the sDrive18d version we recommend is responsive from low revs. Stick with entry-level SE specification, as it gets you everything you'll want including 17in alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, sat-nav and climate control.

Our pick: sDrive18d SE
