Car manufacturers are restricted by the fact they have to quote economy figures achieved through a laboratory-based Government test. What Car? isn't. Our True MPG team tests new cars out on the road every week to tell you how frugal cars actually are.

Only a few cars we’ve tested so far have done more than 60mpg, but they're now available as used cars, too. Here’s our pick of the best used examples from the What Car? approved used classified pages:

Ford Fiesta

The Fiesta 1.6 TDCi returned 62.1mpg in the True MPG test. The '13/13 car is in Titanium spec which includes cruise and climate controls. It's covered 42,434 miles and is priced at Β£9995.

Honda Civic

The Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC managed 66.4mpg in our tests, second best only to the Rio. This 2012 example in SE trim has alloy wheels and iPod connectivity. It has 11,296 miles on the clock and is yours for Β£14,000.

Hyundai i20

The i20 1.1 CRDi Blue achieved 61.1mpg in our tests. This nearly new '14/14 car comes with air-con and has done 5000 miles. Grab it for Β£9750.

Kia Rio

The Rio 1.1 CRDi Ecodynamics returned an impressive 70.6mpg in our True MPG test, the highest score to date. This '12/62 example that comes with air-conditioning, 14,389 miles on the clock and a Β£7800 price tag.

Renault Clio

The Renault Clio 1.5 dCi returned 60.1mpg in True MPG testing. Dynamique TomTom trim includes sat-nav and climate control. It's a '14/63 model that's done just 1010 miles and you can buy it for Β£10,995.
