The Skoda Superb was originally launched back in 2001. It was a competent car but went largely unnoticed. When it came to launching the second-generation car in 2008, Skoda decided to create a car that stood out, with more distinctive styling and innovative design touches like the part saloon/ part hatchback feature.
Built on the same underpinnings as the VW Passat, the Mk2 offers a good blend of ride and handling. Inside it’s nicely finished and generally well equipped. The cabin offers plenty of space, particularly the boot, which is cavernous with the rear seats up or down.
Four petrol engines are available from a 1.4-litre TSI with 123bhp to a 257bhp 3.6-litre V6.
Diesels options include a 1.9-litre TDI Greenline engine with 104bhp and a 2.0-litre TDI with either 138bhp or 168bhp. In 2009 the 1.9 TDI was replaced with a 1.6-litre Greenline, which offers the same power with increased efficiency.
Four-wheel drive is available on the 1.8 TSI, 2.0 TDI and 3.6 V6, and in 2010 Skoda launched an estate version. The model received a face-lift in 2013 which introduced a revised front-end with new headlights and LED light technology at the rear.

Skoda Superb problems
Generally, reliability on the Skoda Superb is, well, superb.
Front tyre wear is a common problem. All models suffer but the problem is exacerbated with the more powerful engines and larger tyres fitted.
If cars are used for towing then check for rear suspension wear and clutch issues; there have been reports of clutches on pre-face-lift models suffering overheating issues.
Two recalls were issued in 2009; the first concerned an electrical issue that could cause a fire and the second related to a DSG gearbox software update. A third, in 2011, dealt with a potential fuel leak issue. All modes affected should have had the relevant work carried out by now, but it is worth contacting your local Skoda dealer to be sure.
The cheapest Superb we found is this 2010 car with the more powerful 168bhp diesel engine. It has covered just over 75,000 miles and comes with rear parking sensors, 17-inch alloy wheels and climate control. It’s available for £8995.
[2.0 TDI 140 SE Plus Hatchback
The 138bhp diesel offers the best blend of performance and economy, and this one is fitted with the DSG gearbox. Being an SE Plus it also comes with lots of kit, including sat-nav, cruise control, Bluetooth and a limited-slip differential. It’s done 18,500 miles and is priced at £16,250
If you are looking for practicality and economy, this 2012 1.6 TDI estate offers both. It’s a manual with just over 18,500 miles and comes with air-conditioning, alloy wheels and cruise control. It’s on sale at £15,495
[2.0 TDI 140 Elegance 4x4 Estate
This 2013 estate has the added practicality of four-wheel drive and just 5276 miles on the clock. It’s fitted with the DSG ‘box plus lots of other equipment including Bluetooth, heated leather seats, a heated windscreen and xenon headlights. The dealer price is £21,995
