Used test: Audi A4 vs BMW 3 Series verdict

These used executive saloons both give you sharp looks, superb quality and plenty of badge appeal for a bargain price. But which should you choose?...

Audi A4 vs BMW 3 Series

Our verdict

Both these models are class-leading executive cars and good used buys, so picking a winner was bound to be a close call from the start. Surprise, surprise, it has remained that way at the end.

The Audi A4 is a bastion of class and discretion, swooning you with its magnificent interior and refinement. It’s also a delight to drive – precise and controlled in every way, and powered by a smooth, punchy engine. And there’s as much space inside as any saloon car of this type can offer.

However, the BMW 3 Series is the superior car to drive. It's better at manoeuvring speeds, thanks to a smoother automatic gearbox, and its rear-wheel-drive chassis is more entertaining than the A4’s. Throw in its popularity, making it easier to find than the A4, and it just nudges its way to victory.
