Families limited to a £6000 budget must look to the Mk2 Focus, but that doesn’t mean they have to compromise on space, practicality or safety kit. They’ll be getting a car that’s great to drive, too, because the Focus handles superbly. It has plenty of room for four six-foot adults too, and the boot is excellent.
The 1.6-litre engine was powerful enough to cope with a family of four, which made it popular, so there are plenty around at low prices.
The five-star NCAP rating is reassuring, as is the car’s reliability. Our survey showed 23% of cars had issues, electrical failures being the most common, but the average repair cost was low,at £280.
