The Abarth 595 is undoubtedly stylish and mightily fast in a straight line, but it’s not the best handling hot hatch and the poor driving position is a big minus when you compare it with the VW Up! GTi. What’s more, plenty of small hot hatches are available for around the same price that are better to drive.

The top of the range is the Competizione model, which features a 178bhp version of the 1.4 T-Jet engine. The 0-62mph sprint takes just 6.7sec, and while it can feel like you're waiting for the turbo to kick in at times, the engine pulls strongly once it's into its stride.
