Is there a new Skoda Octavia coming soon?
A reader is considering buying a Skoda Octavia and wonders is a new model is on the way. If so, should he wait for it?...
I am considering changing my car soon and have looked at the Skoda Octavia. The current car appears to have been on sale for quite a few years, so I was wondering if there is a new version going on sale soon? If there is, do you have any details about it and should I buy it instead of the current model?
What Car? says…
The current Octavia has been on sale since 2013 and a replacement for it is due to go on sale in July. We have recently received details about the new, fourth-generation Octavia.
It will have more interior space, a larger boot and plenty of new technology, so we'd recommend it over the previous version, even though that model is still a good car.
Prices will start at £22,390 for the 1.5 TSI petrol in SE trim, making the Octavia comparable in cost to rivals such as the Ford Focus. A cheaper 1.0-litre petrol S version will go on sale later this year.
Alongside conventional petrol and diesel versions, a plug-in hybrid will be offered for the first time. Called iV, it uses the same 1.4-litre engine and electric motor as the five-star Volkswagen Passat GTE. With a pure-electric range of 34 miles, this version will suit you if you mainly do short trips.
And if you opt for the DSG automatic gearbox with the 1.5 petrol engine, you get 48-volt mild-hybrid technology that improves fuel economy and emissions.
The 2.0 diesel engine from the previous Octavia is still on offer, but its NOx emissions are now up to 80% lower.
There have been plenty of improvements inside the Octavia too, including a new digital instrument cluster, a head-up display for the driver and a touchscreen infotainment system with physical shortcut buttons for ease of use while driving. The system can also be controlled using hand gestures and via Laura, Skoda’s virtual assistant.
We’ve not driven the Octavia hatchback yet, but we expect to soon, so check back on the website for updates.

Best family cars
Many people who once would have chosen a traditional 'family hatchback' are now buying SUVs and MPVs instead. However, that doesn’t mean the family hatchback market is dead; it still accounts for a huge number of sales and is very competitive, so there are some great buys out there. Here we count down the top 10 – and reveal the models that are best to steer clear of.
10. Vauxhall Astra
If you're looking for a spacious family car with low company car tax bills, the Vauxhall Astra is hugely compelling, while big discounts are available for private buyers, too. Just bear in mind that the best rivals now offer better ride comfort and more standard safety kit.
9. Seat Leon
Like its sister car, the Volkswagen Golf, the Seat Leon handles well, has a strong range of engines and features a practical and user-friendly interior. True, some of the plastics feel rather cheap, but this is easier to forgive when you consider how well priced the Leon is.
