The entry-level engine is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 197bhp. This comes as standard with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. You need to work it quite hard to get the best from it.

Alfa Romeo now has one of its strongest-ever model line-ups, after years of living off past glories.

The BMW 3 Series-rivalling Giulia executive saloon is one of the best cars in its class to drive and has performed very well in the annual What Car? Reliability Survey, while the closely related Stelvio competes in the booming SUV class.

Smaller and larger SUVs are planned, as is a two-door coupé version of the Giulia that will take on the Audi A5, BMW 4 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé.

It’s all a long way from the days when Alfa Romeo just had a couple of dated hatchbacks (the Mito and Giulietta) and the niche 4C sports car in its range.

Sprint models benefit from a number of aesthetic upgrades, such as 19in wheels, black brake calipers, gloss black exhaust pipes, black badging and a black grille. More functional upgrades include adaptive cruise control, lumbar support and privacy glass as well as heated seats and a heated flat-bottomed leather steering wheel.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio offers alluring looks, entertaining handling and a decent equipment list. For the money, though, there are better all-rounders that have more polished interiors, even better driving dynamics with a more comfortable ride, and more space inside.

We define a large SUV as anything longer than 4.5 metres. These cars aren’t usually particularly cheap to buy or lease, so in return we expect a roomy cabin, a lengthy list of standard equipment and excellent cruising refinement. A few models in this class are two-wheel drive, but the vast majority have four-wheel drive for at least a modicum of off-road ability.

The Mazda CX-5 is firmly road-focused, but its 2.0-litre petrol engine is a strong, refined performer, making it looks good value for less than&nbsp;£25k. If you can stretch the budget a fair bit, the Audi Q5 provides a combination of comfort, driving prowess, quality and space that's hard to beat. Unlike some rivals, it can't be had with seven seats, though.

A more affordable, yet well-equipped alternative is the Peugeot 5008. It’s more than capable of coping with family life&nbsp;– and all versions have seven seats as standard.&nbsp;
