The Alpine A110 is one of the most entertaining and rewarding sports cars you can buy – at any price. Being ultra-lightweight means that, despite its relatively small engine, performance won't disappoint, while at the same time it feels even nimbler to drive than a Porsche Cayman. The S version is sharper and more focused, and ideal for anyone who fancies the odd track day experience.

Trim: Pure

Entry-level Pure trim is our choice and keeps the price down. It comes with leather seat trim, air-con, sat-nav, a DAB radio, Bluetooth, LED headlights and 17in wheels. The lightweight bucket seats that are standard don't have an adjustable backrest, so it's worth considering the optional six-way adjustable seats, which are more comfortable.

Engine: 1.8L Turbo

This 1.8-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol comes with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. With 249bhp at 6000rpm and 239Ib ft at a lowly 2000rpm, it’s enough to punch the featherweight A110 from 0-62mph in 4.5sec and on to a limited top speed of 155mph. It also sounds fantastic and is surprisingly economical – we managed 33.7mpg with a mix of driving.
