The Audi A1 is an appealing small car with an upmarket interior and pert handling, but it's starting to feel its age elsewhere

Trim:

SE

Entry-level SE trim gets some decent standard equipment, including 15in alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, cruise control, air-con, a 6.5in colour infotainment screen and a DAB radio. There are a couple of caveats; you’ll have to pay extra for Bluetooth and there’s the choice of just two engines – the 1.0 petrol or 1.6 diesel, neither of which is our pick of the range. This is a decent entry point to the A1 line-up, but there are better options if you can afford the extra.

Engine:

1.0 TFSI

This three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine has a respectable 94bhp, and while it’s comfortable enough for urban use, it can feel a little underpowered if you’re trying to make brisk progress on faster roads. It is efficient, with CO2 emissions of less than 100g/km with the standard five-speed manual gearbox fitted. A seven-speed automatic is optional.
