Overall, the A1 is a darned fine car. At least, the version we’ve driven so far is, being comfortable and tidy to drive and reasonably roomy, while it should be no more expensive to run than non-premium rivals. However, while it offers a better premium small car package than the Mini 5dr, the Volkswagen Polo has all the same virtues, plus it’s roomier and has a slightly smarter interior. Oh yes, and more equipment, for a much lower price tag. So while the A1 is a very good small car, it’s hard to see what, other than those four rings on its bonnet, you’re getting for your extra cash.

This is our preferred trim level. It adds Bluetooth, sat-nav, a leather-covered steering wheel, sports seats (including lumbar adjustment) and aluminium interior highlights to SE’s kit roster. You also get stiffer suspension, which is a bit too firm for our liking – but you can revert to SE’s softer set-up as a no-cost option. Sport trim is also available with our favourite engine, the 1.4 TFSI 125.

1.0 TFSI

This three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine has a respectable 94bhp, and while it’s comfortable enough for urban use, it can feel a little underpowered if you’re trying to make brisk progress on faster roads. It is efficient, with CO2 emissions of less than 100g/km with the standard five-speed manual gearbox fitted. A seven-speed automatic is optional.
