Overall, the A1 is a darned fine car. At least, the version we’ve driven so far is, being comfortable and tidy to drive and reasonably roomy, while it should be no more expensive to run than non-premium rivals. However, while it offers a better premium small car package than the Mini 5dr, the Volkswagen Polo has all the same virtues, plus it’s roomier and has a slightly smarter interior. Oh yes, and more equipment, for a much lower price tag. So while the A1 is a very good small car, it’s hard to see what, other than those four rings on its bonnet, you’re getting for your extra cash.

One of the most extreme of the A1’s regular trim levels, S line brings sports-focused styling modifications rather than a much longer standard equipment list. You get a bodykit, 17in alloy wheels, part-leather sports seats and xenon headlights. It has an even stiffer suspension set-up than Sport – although, again, you can go for the softer SE set-up at no cost. We don’t think there’s enough extra useful kit here to warrant the additional charge over the Sport model, so we’d give it a miss.

This four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine has plenty of low-rev shove, so it always feels capable of making the A1 go pretty swiftly. It’s resonably refined, albeit with a sporty, gravelly note under hard acceleration. It shouldn’t use much fuel, thanks to cylinder deactivation technology that shuts down two cylinders when cruising. Acceptably low CO2 emissions mean it doesn’t cost much in company car tax, either. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a seven-speed automatic available as an option.
