The A1 is a fine car – it's great to drive, comfortable to sit in and is available with lots of big car options. However, if you can live without a posh badge, the Peugeot 208 and VW Polo offer slightly more for less.

Range-topping trim gets 18in alloys, a contrasting black roof and a black exterior styling pack along with privacy glass. Unless you love the looks, there’s little reason to recommend this expensive trim level.

This 108bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine is a great fit for the Audi A1. It delivers more than adequate performance with a reasonable purchase price and easy to swallow running costs.
