The A3 Saloon is tidy in bends, comfortable and well equipped, making it a very competitive option against its closest rivals. However, an Audi A4 or BMW 3 Series is worth the extra if you can afford it.

Don’t be put off by the fact that Sport is the entry-level trim, because we think it actually gives the best balance of cost and equipment. It comes with plenty of toys, including 17in alloy wheels, power-folding mirrors, rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, Audi’s Virtual Cockpit and a 10.1in touchscreen infotainment system with DAB radio, Bluetooth, built-in sat-nav and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring.

Our favourite engine is slightly larger 1.5-litre petrol, which boosts the power to 148bhp and, as such, proves more versatile than the entry-level engine. Its extra oomph means that it’ll cover 0-62mph around two seconds quicker and that you don’t have to rev it quite as hard to make quick progress.
