Review

The latest Audi A4 looks sharp on the outside and has one of the highest quality interiors in the executive car class. The BMW 3 Series is a slightly better all-rounder and offers keen drivers greater thrills behind the wheel, but the A4 is more comfortable if you stick with our favourite Sport Edition trim. The 35 TDI diesel that we also recommend in the A4 is quick, smooth and economical.

Technik trim is not to be sniffed at. You get 17in alloy wheels, power-folding door mirrors, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, heated front seats, front and rear climate control, cruise control, keyless start, supple Comfort Dynamic suspension, four-way lumbar adjustment, 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, LED headlights, a 12.3in digital instrument screen, a 10.1in infotainment touchscreen, a DAB radio, eight speakers, two USB ports, Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto and sat-nav. That's not a bad tally.

Avoid the 134bhp 30 TDI because it feels a bit flat for a premium executive saloon with 0-62mph taking 9.5sec. It is smooth and frugal, though, officially averaging more than 60mpg, and RDE2 compliant.
