Cost & verdict

Everyday costs, plus how reliable and safe it is

Unsurprisingly, the A5 commands a small premium over an equivalent A4 saloon. The range starts with a 148bhp 2.0 petrol and tops out with the range-topping 3.0-litre diesel. However, we reckon the 187bhp 2.0-litre petrol (badged 40 TFSI) is the engine to go for. This is priced on a par with the rival BMW 4 Series, while the Mercedes C-Class Coupé will cost you a little more.

For those looking to run an A5 through work, CO2 emissions will be just as important. And there's good news: the most efficient diesel (the 40 TDI in entry-level Sport trim) pumps out a respectable 117g/km.

Entry-level Sport trim is our favourite. It comes with 17in alloy wheels, sports seats, LED interior lighting and sat-nav. Bigger alloy wheels, sport suspension, more aggressive styling, LED headlights and a sports steering wheel are among the additions when paying extra for S line trim and Black Edition. Unless you really want a sportier look, we wouldn’t bother – these trims push up the A5's price considerably. The stupendously lavish Vorsprung models are even more expensive, so harder to recommend.

As for safety, all versions of the A5 come with low-speed automatic emergency braking. The optional Tour Pack (or standard on range-topping Vorsprung trim) adds high-speed emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist an various other active safety aids.

The Audi A5 Coupé is comfortable, quiet and very classy inside. It could be a little more exciting to drive (a BMW 4 Series is better in this respect), but it's still an incredibly rounded car – especially if you opt for the 40 TFSI petrol in entry-level Sport trim.

  • Plush interior
  • Strong and smooth engines
  • Practical by coupé standards
  • Steering could be more involving
  • You’ll want to add a few options
  • Sports suspension brings an overly firm ride
