Review

The Audi Q5 is one of the very best SUVs you can buy. It's more comfortable and refined than the BMW X3 and puts the Volvo XC60 to shame when it comes to handling and infotainment. The 2.0-litre diesel engine (badged 40 TDI) makes most sense, as does entry level Sport trim – although we would recommend adding one or two options.

Trim: S Line

This mid-range trim takes the sporty look up a notch with larger 19in alloy wheels, more aggressive bumper styling and privacy glass. You also get powerful LED headlights and part-leather seats trim. For us, though, the price jump over Sport is too much for the benefits you get.

Engine: 40 TDI Quattro

While not super-quick in terms of outright pace, this 187bhp diesel is flexible enough to deliver strong real-world pace. That means there’s no need to rev it hard to keep up with traffic. It’s also very smooth compared with equivalent rivals' 2.0-litre diesel engines and in real-world driving can return 41.0mpg.
