The outstanding Audi Q7 offers a relaxing blend of comfort and peaceful cruising manners, while proving surprisingly agile for such a spacious seven-seat luxury SUV. Go for the 50 TDI in S Line trim, or the 55 TFSI if you really don’t want a diesel.

Black Edition adds four-zone climate control (allowing rear-seat passengers to dial in a different temperature to those in the front) and polished-oak trims to everything you get with S line trim. You also get lowered suspension and bigger 21in alloys wheels, which don’t deliver quite such a supple ride.

This plug-in hybrid packs a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine that’s helped along by a big battery and electric motor. Combined they produce 376bhp which is good for a 0-62mph time of just 5.9sec, equalling the petrol only 55 TFSIe. It isn’t in as low a company car tax bracket as the X5 45e, partially because its electric-only range is only 27 miles.
