George Hill
Title:
Used car writer

George Hill has worked as What Car?’s used car writer since 2024, having previously joined the team as a staff writer in 2021. In his current role he focuses on used car reviews, used car group tests and used car top 10s, as well new car editorial, for What Car? magazine and whatcar.com.

If you follow What Car? on social media, you might also see him presenting the odd video on new and used cars too.

George’s career in the automotive industry began after the first Covid lockdown in 2020, when he then decided to move away from a career in property and towards a career in motoring journalism. After graduating from the Automotive Journalism Masters at Coventry University in September 2021, George joined the What Car? team soon afterwards as a staff writer. In this role, George looked after the title’s new car deals content, while also covering news, advice and new car reviews.

In his spare time, you can find George sitting in London traffic in his VW Golf GTI MK5, or thinking about how he can fit another second-hand car into his life, having previously owned an unusually reliable Range Rover, a Volvo C30 and many more.

George is an expert in:

  • Used cars
  • New cars
  • Petrol, diesel and hybrid cars
  • Electric cars
  • Consumer advice

George Hill Q&A

What’s the best piece of advice you could offer a car buyer?
Don’t let excitement or convenience get the better of you. It can be all too easy to look at a car through rose tinted spectacles, particularly when you find one you really like the look of. For this reason, I always recommend going to see a car in person to properly check it over. This way, you can find out whether the car drives smoothly and comfortably. Plus, you can check over some of the finer details, such as the bodywork, the electrics, the service history and the general wear and tear. If it’s not quite what you expect in person, don’t be afraid to walk away – even if it means you have to take the train home.

What’s the best car you’ve ever driven?
The best car I’ve ever driven is a BMW M5 E28, which is the first generation of the super saloon. I was very lucky to drive this car briefly for a feature I was writing for my masters degree, and I’ve since never forgotten about it. It’s a car that looks incredibly understated, and yet it can go from 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds and reach a top speed 152mph – impressive stats for a car from 1985.

What will the car market look like in 20 years?
I think cars will be more of a device rather than a mode of transport in 20 years time. Even today, infotainment systems operate like a tablet or smartphone, while driver assistance technology is continuing to impact the way we drive. Of course, with the 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars looming, the majority of new cars will be powered by electricity.
