WITH THIS KIND of budget, all manner of exotic sports cars are within reach. For slightly more than £100,000, there’s the aurally epic Audi R8, or for double that, the Lamborghini Huracán and the phenomenal Ferrari 488 GTB. If you’re going to buy just one, though, we think it should be McLaren’s ‘entry-level’ masterpiece, the 540C.

Why? Well, first off, it’s staggeringly good to drive. And while it’ll blast from 0-62mph in a neck-wrenching 3.5sec, it handles as delicately as the ultra-precise Lotus Elise through corners, with steering that involves you completely.

The 540C’s 3.8-litre V8 engine also delivers its power in a smoother fashion than McLaren’s more potent supercars, the 570S and 650S, making it more useable on the road.

It’d be a bit of a stretch to describe a car this pricey as ‘good value’, but it doesn’t seem so ridiculous when the 540C costs £72k less than the 650S, yet in some ways is better to drive.

Admittedly, the R8 is a slightly better choice if you’ll be driving your sports car to the office every day, but for only a few thousand pounds extra, the 540C is resolutely more exciting.
