The model
Read full reviewIn the ultra-competitive arena of the premium family car, the BMW 1 Series is right up there, but not the best – that's the Audi A3. It delivers a good blend of driver appeal with decent ride comfort, along with fine practicality, but its main strengths are a top-notch interior and a brilliant infotainment system.
get the best priceThe trim
See full equipmentM Sport adds 18in alloy wheels, more distinctive bumpers, stiffer M Sport suspension (which offers the best ride and handling balance), and a few more luxuries, such as power-folding door mirrors, heated front seats and leather trim. So if you are buying a 1 Series because for its premium or sportier flavour, M Sport makes the most sense.
The engine
See full engine specsThe 118d is expected to be the big seller and we can see why if you're a high-mileage driver. It feels punchy and impressive in town or on motorways, and although the engine’s a bit grumbly it has a very silky stop-start system – smoother than the 118i’s. The A200d has a better spread of shove throughout its rev-range, though. This 118d works better with the automatic gearbox than the 118i, too, and will do around 50 MPG in the real world if driven carefully.
