The 118d is expected to be the big seller and we can see why if you're a high-mileage driver. It feels punchy and impressive in town or on motorways, and although the engine’s a bit grumbly it has a very silky stop-start system – smoother than the 118i’s. The A200d has a better spread of shove throughout its rev-range, though. This 118d works better with the automatic gearbox than the 118i, too, and will do around 50 MPG in the real world if driven carefully.
