Review

In the ultra-competitive arena of the premium family car, the BMW 1 Series is the best of the lot. It delivers a fantastic blend of driver appeal and ride comfort, along with decent practicality, a top-notch interior and a brilliant infotainment system.

Trim: SE

Entry-level SE covers the basics, and makes sense if saving money is at the forefront of your mind. You get 16in alloy wheels, air conditioning, automatic lights/ wipers and cruise control, along with LED headlights and a good infotainment system, which includes an 8.8in touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth and sat-nav.

Engine: 118i

This 1.5-litre, three-cylinder with 138bhp is enough to get you from 0-62mph in 8.5sec. That's plenty, because it's also keen to rev and flexible enough from around 1500rpm. It's pretty quiet, too, although the stop-start system isn't very smooth and the automatic gearbox is a bit jerky in traffic, so the manual is best.
