The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is spacious, well finished and good to drive, if a little expensive

Trim: Sport

Sport models aren’t massively more expensive and do add useful features such as a sliding rear bench, electric folding rear seats and sports front seats. Factor in 17in wheels and it could be worth considering if you like its looks.

Engine: 218i

This entry-level petrol engine is shared with the Mini Cooper. Although it’s small, a turbo means there’s enough power if you’re prepared to work it hard. If you’re doing mostly town driving with the odd bit of motorway, it’ll be fine, although you might want more power if you regularly have a full car.
